Starting Something New 3
This is the third worksheet in a series that follows Tessa and Jason as they start a new business. The series is designed to get intermediate (B1) students chatting and practising useful structures and vocabulary.
This worksheet focuses on useful adverbs such as ‘obviousy’, ‘actually’, and ‘eventually.’ It contains speaking, reading, and listening components.
The worksheet starts with a reading exercise in whcih students must read about some of the challenges and decisions facing Tessa and Jason, a pair of friends who have decided to start a bakery food truck. Students must read the text and answer some comprehension questions, but they also must match several underlined adverbs such as ‘roughly’ and ‘basically’ to their definitions. After this, students will use each of the new adverbs they have learned to complete several sentences with them, helping them to see them in context.
The next exercise focuses specifically on ‘actually’, and students will read about ‘actually’ and then practice using it by playing a game which encourages them to politely correct their partner by using the word ‘actually.’
Next, students will focus on the word ‘eventually.’ The class will read a short explanation of the word, and then right a few sentences about plans they have in the distant future using ‘eventually.’ Next, they will read a short story about a woman who opens a business, and find 5 places where they can add the word ‘eventually.’ These two exercises demonstrate to the class that ‘eventually’ is useful when talking about both the past and the future.
Next, students will read through and discusss 6 different ideas Tessa and Jason have for the branding and ‘vibe’ of the bakery truck (e.g. a coffee based food truck or a French bakery based food truck). Students should be encoruaged in this section to use some of the adverbs they have learned so far.
Finally, students must listen to an audio of Jason and Tessa discussing the different options. Tessa does not like 5 of the 6 options, and the class will listen to the discussion and say why she does not like each idea.
The transcript for the audio is available at the end of the Teacher’s Version (TV).
