Starting Something New 2

This is the second worksheet in a series that follows Tessa and Jason as they start a new business. The series is designed to get intermediate (B1) students chatting and practising useful structures and vocabulary. It contains speaking, listening, and reading elements.

This worksheet focuses on structures used to make suggestions such as ‘Why don’t you…?’ or ‘If I were you I would…’. The worksheet follows Tessa and Jason as they brainstorm ideas for small businesses.

The worksheet starts with a dialogue between Tessa and Jason as they talk about starting a business. Students must answer comprehension questions and then pick out phrases used to make suggestions from the dialogue.

Next, students will read some sentences asking for advice and write advice using the phrases they picked out from the dialogue.

After this is a roleplay exercise in which one student will read a card with a problem (e.g. ‘I can’t decide what to study at university’) and then their partner will give them advice.

After this is a listening exercise in which Tessa will pitch several business ideas to Jason. This audio contains all of the suggestions phrases the students have learned. The class must listen and answer comprehension questions.

The final exercise is a roleplay exercise. In the audio exercise, Jason and Tessa decide to start a food truck business. Now the students must read through different choices to be made regarding a foood truck (eg. type of food, branding, location and strategy etc) and will discuss with a partner which direction they want to take with each area. Finally, each pair will present their idea to the class.

The transcript for the audio is available at the end of the Teacher’s Version (TV).
