It’s the end of the World!!

It’s the end of the World!!

This free, fun, and quirky conversational lesson is suitable for any level from B1+ to C2, and focuses on the language around making decisions. The worksheet starts with a warm up exercise, and then asks students to match useful decision-making phrases such as “I’m on the fence” and “that’s a no brainer” to their definitions. After this students will use these phrases to complete a series of sentences.

On the next page the class will be presented with the main exercise of this worksheet: a hypothetical situation about the end of the world. In this situation the class has a helicopter with limited space, and they are flying to an island away from the chaos of the apocalypse. The students will be placed in pairs or groups, and have to read through a list of twelve people, choosing which six they want to take. The students must debate among themselves, and should try to use the phrases they learned in the previous exercises. Every class will come up with a different list, and there are no right or wrong answers, the point of this exercise is to stimulate conversation.

After this exercise has been completed, students will then be presented with two more difficult choices: what to take to the island, and where on the island they should set up base. The students are given a list of 12 items and told they must choose 4, and given a list of four possible locations on the island.

This lesson is perfect for a class that likes to talk, and good for any class that has recently studied agreeing and disagreeing. Also, with a particularly talkative class this worksheet could be stretched into two 90 minute lessons. The teacher’s version contains a more in depth guide.
