Passive Voice

This B2 grammar worksheet focuses on the the passive voice in all the major tenses.

The worksheet starts with a grammar explanation and an exercise with passive voice in present simple. Next, the class will be given a table which shows passive voice in all the major tenses. This is also a useful way to give your class an overview of the tenses. The class will then be asked to rewrite several active sentences in various tenses in the passive voice.

Next, students will read a very angry business email which uses active voice and sounds too accusatory and personal. Students will use the passive voice to “tone down” the email.

Finally, students will learn that passive voice is often used in newspaper articles, and will complete some snippets from articles using the passive voice.

This worksheet gradually progresses in difficulty and complexity, and will be great for any students looking for an understanding of passive voice, but also a brief overview of the major tenses.
