Restaurants and Reviews

Restaurants and Reviews

This is an intermediate worksheet about restaurants and reviews that contains speaking, reading, writing, and listening elements. The worksheet follows the story of a couple who are deciding where to go for their anniversary dinner. It also focuses on qualifiers such as ‘quite’, ‘slightly’, and ‘way too’.

The worksheet starts with some conversation questions, after which students rate which aspects of restaurants are most important to them (food quality, price, etc.). Next, students read eight restaurant reviews and discuss which restaurant they would prefer to go to.

Next comes the first listening exercise, in which a couple discuss the reviews that the class has just read and decide which restaurant to go to. Students listen to the audio and answer comprehension questions.

Next, students read about useful qualifiers that can be used in reviews, such as “the food was slightly too spicy.” They then read three more reviews and find places where they can add qualifiers. After this, students think about a restaurant they know and write a review using the qualifiers they have learned.

In the final exercise, students listen to the couple having a conversation about the meal they had and find out why they were not very happy with the restaurant.

There is also an optional homework exercise in which students look up restaurant reviews in English, read about a restaurant, and report back.

The transcript for the audio file can be found at the end of the Teacher’s Version (TV).
