Natural Mysteries
This is a video based B2-C1 level worksheet about natural mysteries that baffled the world for decades. Please note that the Teacher’s Version (TV) contains necessary information for this worksheet.
Students will start with some warm-up questions about nature and animals, and then read a conversation between two people about the Bermuda Triangle, which contains phrases to suggest theories and express doubt. Students will match these phrases to their definitions, and then read through four real-world natural mysteries and speculate about what might cause them (e.g. bee populations mysteriously shrinking), and if possible use some of the phrases taught by the previous exercise. After the students have made their theories about the cause of the mysteries, the teacher will read from the Teacher’s Version (TV) to tell them what really caused these phenomena. Three of the mysteries have been explained, but one remains a mystery to this day.
Next, the students will read about the radioactive boar paradox in Chernobyl. For decades the radiation levels around Chernobyl have been steadily decreasing except for one animal: wild boars. Students will discuss this mystery, and then learn some key vocabulary for understanding the video about it. Finally, students will watch the video about the radioactive boar paradox and answer comprehension questions about it.
This worksheet will work well with any high-level class that likes to talk and is a bit creative. It could also be used with C1-C2 classes, although the first page may be too easy.
