Moving to a New Country 3: Bureaucracy

This is the third and final worksheet in a B1-B2 series about a man who moves to a new country for work. The worksheet follows Michael as he struggles with some visa issues in England. This worksheet primarily focuses on understanding and dealing with bureaucracy. The worksheet contains speaking, listening, reading, and writing elements.

First, students will read a formal email from the visa office and answer some comprehension questions. Next, students will read some statements from people living around the world about the bureaucracy in their countries, and identify some useful idioms in the statements such as “red tape” and “jump through hoops”.

Students will then learn  about some more advanced modal verbs such as “managed to” and “supposed to”, and practice using them by writing a statement about their own experience with bureaucracy.

Finally, the students will listen to a conversation at the visa bureau and answer comprehension questions.

This worksheet should work well with most B1-B2 classes, but should be particularly useful for anyone who needs to deal with official English.

The audio transcript can be found at the end of the Teacher’s Version (T.V) worksheet.
