Wanna, Gotta, Gonna

This is an intermediate worksheet about ‘wanna’, ‘gotta’, and ‘gonna’, three of the most commonly shortened phrases in English. The worksheet contains speaking, writing, and listening sections, and has a focus on pronunciation. ‘Gonna’, ‘wanna’, and ‘have gotta’ are extremely common in spoken English, so this lesson should help with listening comprehension. The transcripts for the audio can be found at the end of the Teacher’s Version (TV) of the worksheet, and this transcript may be useful for any students who are struggling. The worksheet follows the story of a couple planning and going on a holiday to Hawaii.

The worksheet starts with an explanation of ‘want to’getting shortened to ‘wanna’ in spoken English, and then asks the students to complete a series of sentences with ‘wanna’ and any verb that makes sense in context. After this students will read through four holiday packages, and decide which they want to go on, and which they don’t want. The students will then make sentences expressing their opinions using ‘wanna’, and practice saying them to the class.

Next the students will listen to a couple discussing the same four holiday packages and discussing their opinions on which they will choose. This audio uses ‘wanna’a lot, and the students must listen and answer some comprehension questions.

After this students will read an explanation of ‘have gotta’ as a way of say ‘must’ or ‘have to’, and complete some sentences with the structure. After that they will make a series of sentences expressing some of their own obligations. Next they will listen to another audio of the same couple, who have chosen to go to Hawaii, and are planning what they have to do. Students will listen and answer some comprehension questions.

Next, the class will read an explanation of ‘going to’for the future, and will complete a series of sentences with this structure. They will then make 5 ‘going to’ sentences, 2 of which are false, and read them to the class with the ‘gonna’ pronunciation. The class must guess which two sentences they think are false.

Finally, the class will listen to an audio of the couple, who are now on a beach in Hawaii, and are planning their next steps. This audio uses ‘gonna’ frequently, but also uses ‘wanna’ and ‘gotta.’
