The Psychology of Supermarkets
This is an upper-intermediate worksheet about the psychology of supermarkets which contains speaking, listening, and reading elements. It will work well with any Business English class that works in or around the supermarket industry, but can also be used as a general interest worksheet for an adult class.
The worksheet starts with a series of warm up questions about supermarkets, and then students will read a short paragraph about the supermarket industry, completing it by choosing the correct words to fill each gap.
Next, students will look at a picture of a supermarkets and match common vocabulary to the picture. This contains often overlooked vocabulary such as “trolley” or “shelves.”
In the next section, students will give each other a quiz to find out what kind of supermarket shopper they are. There are 10 multiple choice questions in this quiz, but students should be encouraged to have a conversation about each question rather than just making a selection.
After completing this quiz students will read which of the four basic shopper profiles they fall under, and discuss whether or not they feel their result was accurate.
After the quiz the worksheet moves onto the final section of the worksheet, a video-based section. Before watching the video students must read a selection of questions such as “Why are milk and bread always at the back of the supermarket?” or “Why do some supermarkets have several different types of floor tiles?” and try to predict what they think the answer will be with a partner.
Students will then learn some key vocabulary that is used in the video and then watch the video. The main task while watching the video is to write down the actual answers for the previous prediction exercise.
