Crisis in the Workplace

This is a free advanced level (C1-C2) worksheet about crisis management and crisis in the workplace. Students will follow the story of a car company which finds out their cars have faulty brakes by reading an email and listening to audio. This worksheet is specifically made for adult ESL learners (although it could be used by high-level teen learners), and has speaking, listening, and reading sections.

Students will start with some warm up questions about crises at work, and then read an email which states that a large number of brakes from a fictional car company are failing. Students will answer some questions about this email, and then learn a series of useful idioms that are used in the next exercise, a conversation between two high level employees of the car company discussing what their next steps should be. Students will listen to this and answer some comprehension questions.

After this students will read through some examples of crises in workplaces, and discuss them with a partner and decide what the best course of action should be. This exercise touches on a supply chain crisis, a cyber-security crisis, and a legal and financial crisis.

In the final exercise, students will listen to a follow up conversation between the two car company employees and answer comprehension questions about what caused the crisis, and how the company has decided to handle it.

This worksheet also contains an optional homework exercise in which students must choose a real world business crisis from a list provided, research it, and report back in the next class.

The transcript for the audio can be found at the end of the Teacher’s Version (TV) document.
