What’s Next for Maya? Part 2: Writing a Strong Cover Letter

This B1–B2 Business English lesson helps students learn how to write an effective cover letter for a job application. It is the continuation of What’s Next for Maya? Part 1: Building a Strong CV, also recently released on our website and available to subscribers. In Part 2, students continue Maya’s journey as she learns how to present her experience, skills and achievements in a convincing and professional way.

Students begin by exploring the differences between a CV and a cover letter before analysing Maya’s application for a Senior Project Coordinator position. They identify strengths and weaknesses in her letter, discuss how to tailor an application to a specific job and consider what makes a cover letter stand out.

The lesson also introduces useful language for making confident but realistic claims. Through practical exercises, students learn how to avoid exaggerated statements, support their strengths with specific examples and organise information into a clear, persuasive cover letter.

Designed for intermediate English learners, this ready-to-teach ESL worksheet is particularly suitable for Business English classes, job application preparation and lessons focusing on professional writing and career development.
