Discussing Personal Tastes
This is a pre-intermediate worksheet about discussing personal tastes which focuses on modifiers such as ‘so’, ‘such’, ‘quite’, and ‘pretty.’ The worksheet starts with 6 pictures of houses, and the students will ask each other a series of taste based questions about the houses (which they prefer etc.), and then the students will rank the houses on a scale of 1-6 and compare their list with a partner.
After this, the class will read a conversation of a couple discussing which house they should buy from the previous exercise. This conversation uses ‘so’ and ‘such’ frequently, and the teacher may want to take a minute to point them out. After the conversation students are asked to make 5 sentences about who likes which house and why. This worksheet does not directly teach present simple, but this may be a good time for the teacher to remind the class of the rules of present simple, as the 5 sentences will be in that tense (e.g. “She doesn’t like house number 5 because she thinks it is ugly”).
After this, the class will read an explanation of ‘so’ vs ‘such’, and complete a series of sentences using the words, and then will look at a series of sofas and describe if they like them or not using ‘so’ and ‘such.’
Next, the class will read another conversation from the same couple trying to decide which of the sofas to buy. This conversation uses ‘pretty’ and ‘quite’ a lot, and the teacher may want to take a moment to point these out. Students will once again write 5 sentences about who likes which sofa and why.
Finally, students will read an explanation of ‘pretty’ and ‘quite’ and look at people wearing clothes and write sentences about whether or not they like the clothes using ‘pretty’ and ‘quite.’
