Moving to a New Country: Hard Choices

This is a B1 (intermediate) PDF worksheet about moving to a new country. The worksheet is the first in a series that follows Michael, an IT worker who moves to London to work for his employer there. This worksheet follows Michael as he decides between moving to London or Barcelona. This worksheet has a focus on listening exercises.

Students will read an email congratulating Michael on being accepted to the position and answer some comprehension questions about the email. Next the students will learn some useful phrases for making hard choices, and listen to a conversation between Michael and his friend Holly and answer some questions. Then the students will make a list of pros and cons and debate whether Michael should move to Barcelona or London.

Next students will learn some basic structures for  politely asking for more information, and write an email asking for more information on London. Finally the students will listen to a phone call in which Michael says he has chosen London, and gives his information for a visa application.

This worksheet will work well for any B1 class, but will work particularly well for anyone planning to move overseas. It touches on email writing, filling out  forms, debates, and polite questions, so it covers quite a wide variety.

The audio transcript can be found at the end of the Teacher’s Version (T.V) worksheet.
