Extreme Sports
This is an intermediate video-based worksheet about extreme sports and impressive feats of endurance. It also has a focus on second conditional. Students will start by asking each other some warm up questions about sports and exercise, and then match some pictures of common extreme sports (bungee jumping etc) to their names.
After this students will read a brief explanation of second conditional and how it is used to describe hypothetical situations (e.g “If I ever ran a marathon I would run slowly”), and then use what they have learned to match halves of 2nd conditional sentences about extreme sports together. After this students will finish second conditional sentences with statements that are true about themselves, giving them more scope to be creative.
Next students will split into pairs and read about incredible feats of endurance or bravery in sports (eg. Terry Fox, the man who ran 143 marathons with one leg), and then describe what they read to their partner.
Finally the students will watch an 8 minute video about a race in Norway in which participants run in circles underneath a stadium for 24 hours.
This worksheet will work well with any intermediate or upper-intermediate class looking to chat, but will also work well as a primer or review to second conditional.
