Going to: Future

This is an intermediate PDF worksheet that covers both ‘going to’ for the future, and ‘was going to’ for changed plans in the past. It follows a story of two housemates having a conflict about chores, and also contains a lot of vocabulary pertaining to housework. This worksheet contains speaking, listening, reading, and writing elements. The first five pages could be used with a lower level class (A2.1) for an introduction to ‘going to’, but the second half gets more difficult.

The lessons starts with students reading a text conversation between two housemates (Ruby and Kevin) in which they discuss who will do what chores. The conversation uses ‘going to’ repeatedly, and students will answer questions about the conversation.

Next, students will read about ‘going to’ and complete several sentences with the structure, and do the same for several ‘going to’ questions about the future. Then they will ask and answer their partner their ‘going to’ questions and write down the answer.

Next, the class will match several basic chores such as ‘vacuum’ and ‘water the plants’ with pictures, which is relevant vocabulary for the following exercises.

After this students will read about the common ‘gonna’ pronunciation of ‘gonna’ and ask each other a few questions using the pronunciation. After that they will read through a schedule for chores for Ruby and Kevin, the housemates from the first exercise, and make ‘gonna’ sentences about them (for example “On Thursday Kevin is gonna walk the dog.”)

After this comes the first of two listening exercises, in which Ruby and Kevin have an argument about cleaning. “Going to’ and ‘gonna’ are used a lot in this conversation, and students must answer some comprehension questions about the argument.

Next, students will read about the structure ‘was going to’ to discuss changed plans (for example: “I was going to drive to work, but my car broke down”). Then they must complete several exercises to help them practice this, including reforming sentences to say the same thing but using ‘was going to’, and making ‘was going to’ sentences about their own lives.

Finally, students will listen to another argument between Ruby and Kevin and answer comprehension questions.

The transcript for the audio can be found at the end of the Teacher’s Version (TV) of the worksheet.
